教育論
文藝春秋３月特別号の特集に、「日本の教育を立て直せ」というのがある。ここに登場するのが、小生が崇拝する藤原正彦。「小学生に英語教えて国滅ぶ」と題し、「一に国語、二に国語、三、四がなくて五に算数」と説いている。
氏は、決して英語を否定している訳ではないが、一に国語、二に国語を強くうったえている。九ページにわたって論じているが、読みながら「そうだ、そうだ、全くそうだ・・」と相槌を打ちながら、非常に面白く読ませていただいた。教養を身につけるには本を読むこと。何よりも読書を重要視しており、感受性が豊かな子供の頃に多くの本に触れることを推奨している。
全くその通りで、７０歳の声を聞くようになると、何を読んでも、そこそこでしかない。情けないなどとは云いたくないが、事実は隠せない。ただ最近、藤原正彦が特に推奨している、新渡戸稲造の「武士道」と福澤諭吉の「学問のすすめ」を手にしたが、明治の初めにここまでの・・と感心することしきりであった。
藤原正彦氏は元々数学者であるが、血は争えず、今では作家としても広く知られる存在となっている。直接はお会いしたことは無いが、人柄といい、知識・教養といい、主義主張といい、今の日本においては、最高の論客、文化人と云える人ではないかと僕は思っている。
A special feature in the March issue of Bungeishunju is called “Rebuild Japanese Education. The man who appears here is Masahiko Fujiwara, whom I admire. In his book, “Teaching English to Elementary School Students Will Destroy the Country,” he argues that “there is no Japanese language in the first place, no Japanese language in the second place, and no Japanese language in the third or fourth place, and arithmetic in the fifth place.
He does not deny English, but he strongly emphasizes the Japanese language and the second language. I found it very interesting to read it, saying “Yes, yes, that’s exactly right…” as I read it. The way to become educated is to read books. He values reading above all else and encourages exposure to many books as a sensitive child.
That’s absolutely true, and no matter what you read when you start to hear the voice of a 70-year-old, it’s only so-so. I don’t want to say it’s pathetic, but I can’t hide the fact. Recently, however, I picked up “Bushido” by Inazo Nitobe and “Gakumon no Susume” by Yukichi Fukuzawa, both recommended by Masahiko Fujiwara.
Masahiko Fujiwara, originally a mathematician, is now widely known as a writer, though blood is not in the cards. I have not met him directly, but I think he is one of the best commentators and cultural figures in Japan today in terms of his personality, knowledge and education, and assertion of principles.
