グループ１９８４年
今月の文芸春秋に、予言の書「日本の自殺」と題し、１９７５年に、グループ１９８４年（共同執筆）が、日本に迫る内部崩壊の危機に警笛を鳴らす論文を出したらしいが、その記事が再掲載されていた。
興味のある方は、是非お読みになることをお勧めする。
小生、幾ら早かろうが遅かろうが、寝床に入ったら睡眠薬代わりに本を読むことが習慣になっている。若いころはそれでも小一時間位は読めたものであるが、最近は１ページ捲るかめくらないかで睡魔に襲われる。そんなのだから小説もまともに読めなくなっている。ところが、今回のこの文章を手にした時は、眠気どころか、爛々と目が輝き、我が意を得たりと小躍りするような気持ちで、いっきに読んでしまった。
この論文は、３５年も前に、このままだと「日本は自殺する」との警笛を鳴らし、時の有識者グループが提言したものであるが、文春が取り上げた様に、小生も全く同感である。
ローマやギリシャなどの強大な経済力と文明の発達した国や民族が没落、消滅して言った歴史を振り返り、今の日本が同じ途を歩いていると指摘しているが、本当にその通りだと思う。
極々簡単に云うと、「国が経済的に発展し、豊になってくると、国民は自己の権利主張だけを声高に叫び、福祉と自由と娯楽を求め、義務は遂行せず、規律や道徳をかるんじ、人権やプライバシイなどの自己の要求だけを増幅させていく。また、逆に政治家や官僚は、大衆に迎合し、自己決定能力を欠き、創造性と建設的思考を衰弱させる。所謂、働かずに楽をして過ごせる社会制度の要求のみを強め、自らの義務ややっかいな規律や道徳は敬遠する。政治家は次の選挙の為に選挙民に迎合し、１０年先の事等は考えず、その場凌ぎの政治に追われる。結果、自らが自らの国を死に至らしめる云うのである。
歴史は繰り返す。過去、幾多の国や民族は、全て同様の道を歩み崩壊しているが、今の日本が全く同じ途を辿っているのでは無いか、との警告である。
In this month’s Bungei Shunju, an article was reprinted in 1975 under the title “Suicide in Japan,” a book of prophecies, in which the group (co-authored by 1984) had apparently published an article sounding the alarm over Japan’s looming internal collapse.

It’s my habit to read a book instead of a sleeping pill when I go to bed, no matter how early or late I am. When I was younger, I could still read for about an hour, but nowadays, I can’t turn a page without getting sleepy. That’s why I can’t read novels anymore. However, when I got this article, I read it at once, not because I was drowsy, but because my eyes lit up brightly and I felt as if I was in awe of myself.
This paper was written 35 years ago by a group of intellectuals who sounded the alarm that Japan would kill itself if the situation remained unchanged, and as the Bunshun reported, I completely agree.
Looking back at the history of Rome, Greece and other countries and peoples with strong economies and advanced civilizations that fell and disappeared, he points out that today’s Japan is walking the same path.
In a nutshell, as a country develops economically and becomes prosperous, the people will shout out their own rights and demand welfare, freedom, and entertainment without fulfilling their obligations, stifling discipline and morality, and amplifying only their own demands for human rights and privacy. And conversely, politicians and bureaucrats are pandering to the masses, lacking the capacity for self-determination, and debilitating to creativity and constructive thinking. It only strengthens the demand for social institutions that allow people to live comfortably without working, and shuns their own obligations and troublesome discipline and morality. Politicians are pandering to the electorate for the next election and are driven by ad hoc politics without thinking about what will happen 10 years from now. As a result, he himself is putting his own country to death.
History repeats itself. It is a warning that while many nations and peoples in the past have all followed a similar path and collapsed, Japan today is following exactly the same path.
