JDMと娘
ＪＤＭ（ジャパンデンタルミッション）というＮＰＯ法人がある。この法人は、
歯科医療をバヌアツ共和国及びフィリッピンのカオハガン島で提供している医療奉仕団体である。
ＪＤＭは私が所属する船場ロータリークラブの仲間である澤田宗久歯科医が代表を務めており、
バヌアツに年２?３回、カオハガンに年３?４回は行っている可也活動的な奉仕団で、１チーム１０?１５名で編成され、
２０数年前から継続的に活動を続けている。
今回（９月１６日から１週間）その医療奉仕団に娘（大学４年）がボランテイアで参加した。単純に、学生生活最後の思い出として・・
くらいの気持ちでの参加ではなかったかと思う。ところが帰国しての報告文（ＪＤＭに提出）を読むと、
娘の場合はボランテイアに行ったのではなく、大変な人生勉強に行った来たようである。
その報告書の一部を引用すると、「カオハガンは甲子園球場位の小さな島で、人口は４５０名内外。会社等というものはなく、
人々の生活は限りなく自給自足に近い原始的なものでした。それは「非文明」や「発展途上国」
といった言葉から想像していたどこか悲惨なイメージとは全く違い、とても穏かでそこに違う形の幸せがあるのを見せ付けられた気分でした。
ブランドの服を着ていなくても人々はとても生き生きとして美しく、子供たちはとても無邪気で、
名札を見て覚えた私の名前お見て連呼していました。道で会えば挨拶をしてくれ、椰子の実を割って分けてくれました。
休みの日にバイト先の上司に会うと挨拶すら億劫で、すぐ隠れてしまうような私とは違い、
とても純粋に人に対する興味を持ち続けている感じがしました。それは我々が「ストレス社会」
の中で引き換えにしてきた人間の根本的な美しさのような気がして、島での数日間はとても人と関わることが楽しく思えました。
幸福とは何だろう？ということを考えさせられた数日間だったと思います。幸せは自分の生活する世界と切り離しては考えられないため、
カオハガン島の幸せが私の幸せだとは思いません。それでも、学歴とか地位とか会社の規模という自分を飾る「箔」より以前に、
人間である我々が、その人間が持つ素晴らしさを失くしていくのはあまりに惜しい気がしました・・・。」、云々とあった。
「可愛い子には旅をさせよ」、そんな格言を思い出した。

It is a medical service organization that provides dental care in the Republic of Vanuatu and Khao Hagan Island in the Philippines.
JDM is represented by Dr. Munehisa Sawada, a dentist who is a member of the Funaba Rotary Club to which I belong.
It is a fairly active service group that goes to Vanuatu 2 or 3 times a year and Khao Hagan 3 or 4 times a year, and is organized with 10 to 15 members per team.
It’s been going on continuously for more than 20 years.
This time (one week from September 16), my daughter (a fourth year university student) volunteered for the medical service team. Simply, as a last memory of my student life…
I don’t think I participated in this event with the same feeling as I did at the time. However, when I read the report (submitted to JDM) on my return to Japan, I found
In my daughter’s case, she didn’t go to volunteer, she went to learn about life.
To quote a part of the report, “Khao Hagan is a small island about the size of a Koshien baseball stadium, with a population of about 450 people. There’s no such thing as a company.
People’s lives were as primitive as they could be, as close to self-sufficiency as possible. It’s “uncivilized” or “developing countries.
It was very peaceful and showed me that there is a different kind of happiness there.
The people were so alive and beautiful even when they weren’t wearing branded clothes, and the kids were so innocent.
He saw my name tag and remembered it, and when he saw my name, he called out my name repeatedly. If I met him on the street, he greeted me and broke some coconuts and shared them with me.
Unlike me, who doesn’t even bother to say hello to my boss on my day off and hides right away.
It felt like a very genuine and sustained interest in people. It’s because we’re a “stress society.
It seemed like a fundamental human beauty that I had traded for in the book, and the few days I spent on the island seemed like a lot of fun to interact with people.
What is happiness? I think it was a few days that made me think about what I want to do. Because happiness cannot be thought of in isolation from the world in which one lives, the
I don’t think Kahagan Island’s happiness is my happiness. Even so, before the “foil” that adorns you in terms of education, status, and the size of your company.
I felt that it was too bad that we, as human beings, were losing the awesomeness that we had…. And so on and so forth.
I was reminded of such an adage as “Let a pretty girl take a trip”.
